Web Applications

As web browsers have evolved and network technologies have matured, it has become increasingly viable to deliver applications directly across the Internet. Web applications generally utilise web browsers to provide the interface to remote applications.

This provides many benefits to the end user, in that Wep applications:

• require no local management of software (beyond the browser itself)
• can more easily integrate with pre-existing web services (such as email)
• are cross-platform compatible wherever an applicable browser can be found (including mobile phones and even video-game consoles).

Due to the centralised nature of web applications, updates are managed by the application provider, ensuring that new features and important security fixes are automatically available. The biggest advantage web applications provide to their users over the traditional desktop counterparts is the ability to focus on what is important to them - the functionality that the application provides - and not the support infrastructure in which it is required to run.
